Inanity Alert: Conservative Republicans Try to Kill Medicare, But Elderly Notice

by George on April 29, 2011

Congressman Paul Ryan

Eddie Munster is all grown up ... but now he's kind of a dick.

Oh, it warmed my heart to watch Republican congressmen back in their home districts trying to explain how the budget plan put forth by Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) is good for seniors.  It’s like watching a mullah trying to sell the Final Solution to B’Nai Brith.

Somehow, our Republican brethren thought the majority they won in the House of Representatives last November gave them license to kill Medicare – as if senior citizens, or anyone with an understanding of recent American history, had forgotten why the Medicare legislation passed in the 1960’s was necessary in the first place.

Lost in the delusion that free-enterprise is the answer to everything from feminine itch to assuring the Earth continues on its elliptical path around the sun, they forgot a very basic fact: for-profit health insurance companies fucking hate old people.

Yeah, so handing a senior citizen a voucher and pushing them into the “free market” of health insurance is a lot like handing them an anvil and pushing them out of a plane.

The reason why is obvious.  A basic tenet of making profit in the health insurance industry is to collect far more premiums than you pay out in benefits.  Since senior citizens consume a lot of medical services – because, you know, they’re old – their presence on a health insurance company’s roster of insured would simply kill their Medical Loss Ratio (MLR).

medicare no parachute

Poor bastard ... forgot his anvil.

An increase in an insurer’s MLR is deleterious to profits and – since these insurers are publicly-owned – well, their stock price would drop like a senior citizen using an anvil as a parachute.

This fairly basic problem is how Medicare legislation came into being in the first place – something every Congressman should damn well know.

But, I am fairly certain that Congressman Ryan does know – and that he just doesn’t care.  What he does care about is his ideological purity.  Unfortunately, he is being guided by an ideology that is pointed at a utopian ideal that only exists in theory.  Worse than that, what Congressman Ryan is pushing is actually an extremist ideology.

I mean, what else but an extremist ideology could result in sending our weakest citizens into the free market to bend the health insurance industry to their will?

I think this is a clear sign that we are witnessing a Republican Party that is riding the crazy train – and Republican congressman are getting an earful from their constituents because of it.

As well they should. It’s an inanity that shouldn’t be overlooked.

The whole fucking world is insane right now. What we need is less Republicans, less Democrats and more fucking Americans!! Where are they hiding?

Apparently, they are showing up at town hall meetings to speak with their Congressman. 🙂

But I know what you mean – we hear from the left and the right, but never seem to hear as much from the “great middle.”
